"Tell Me the Number before Infinity, The Story of a Girl with a Quirky Mind, an Eccentric Family, and Oh Yes, a Disability" is a memoir in 60 short chapters arranged chronologically by Becky Taylor, who was born with cerebral palsy, and by her mother, Dena Taylor. Dena writes of Becky's birth in 1972, discovering Becky's exceptional gift for calculus and depth of thought even at the age of four. Together they write about her school years and college to adulthood, in counterpoint, from their own distinct perspectives. Although several books on disabilities already exist, the use of two narrations is unique.

TELL ME THE NUMBER BEFORE INFINITY is a hero's journey with Becky Taylor at the forefront of the pivotal 1975 federal education act mainstreaming disabled children into the public schools. Parents, teachers, people with disabilities, people who know and work with people with disabilities, those curious about how a child's mind works, and even brain researchers will findTELL ME THE NUMBER BEFORE INFINITY a fascinating account as the authors describe life and the realities of having a disability.

Becky Taylor has a degree in accounting, and is a Computer Science graduate from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She lives in Santa Cruz where she vice-chairs the Commission on Disabilities, and is involved in other civic organizations. Dena Taylor, M.S.W., Rutgers University, is the mother of two grown daughters, and is retired from careers in social work and education. She is the author, editor and co-editor of six books on women's issues.

Included are photos and newspaper clippings from throughout Becky’s life.

“I learned so much about human nature reading this book that I forgot to worry about the disability of one co-author and the enormous frustrations of the other. It’s not that this exceptional mother-and-daughter team glosses anything over; they face all of it like warriors, with ingenuity and courage, and we learn a great deal from that, too. Rather it’s their focus on the power within that struck me to the core. It’s hearing myself laughing out loud at their beautiful sense of humor. It’s understanding through them that the strength it takes to face life head on can inspire readers like me, who feel genuinely renewed at book’s end.” —Patricia Holt, former book review editor, San Francisco Chronicle

Tell Me the Number before Infinity The Story of a Girl with a Quirky Mind an Eccentric Family and Oh Yes a Disability edition by Becky Taylor Dena Taylor Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

This is such an inspirational story. I have known Dena and Becky for a few years and never knew their story. I took the book to a motorcycle race thinking I could read it between the races, but I could not put it down and read the whole book blocking out the loud noises of the motorcycles. I was so intrigued with the format of the book -- Dena's story, Becky's story, photos, poems. I cannot believe their challenges they met along the way that they both handled as a mother and child. They made it through their tears and laughter. Everyone should read this book no matter your age or gender or teacher or doctor .
Midway through Tell Me The Number Before Infinity, Becky Taylor, a young woman with Cerebral Palsy, announces to Dena her mother, “I’m tired of being a trailblazer”. It is then that Becky makes a bold and important decision that will flip her life dramatically towards a more positive direction. Though Becky made this adamant decision years ago, in this groundbreaking literary work, despite her plea, a trailblazer she is! Along with her mother, Dena Taylor the co-author of this timely and beautifully designed paperback, readers will certainly be convinced to examine their stereotypes and evolve.

Stylistically this book was impossible for me to put down. For the better part of the book, mother and daughter offer up their own individual recounting of pivotal experiences they simultaneously went through, but as evidenced, had their unique points of view. Their smart sense of humor is peppered throughout the book exposing one of the core strengths that has certainly carried them through excruciatingly painful periods and events. We are privy to the barrage of obstacles they encountered prior to many of the laws and accommodations that presently help ease the way, but by no means have solved discriminatory practices and attitudes.

This book is for everyone. As much as it is a story of living in our day and age with Cerebral Palsy, it is also a tender and honest story about love between a mother and daughter as well as Becky’s father and sister. Becky and Dena are to be applauded and acknowledged for their frank and vulnerable look inside their interesting family, from the day of Becky’s birth all the way through to her adulthood. With this book, Becky and Dena creatively champion change for our society that is long overdue. Hopefully, Tell Me The Number Before Infinity, will be required reading in our schools along with other pro-active curriculum designed to eradicate bullying and expedite our understanding and reverence of “difference”.

In one of the beautiful stories, Becky acknowledges her appreciation of the powerful way her mind works perhaps because of CP. For readers living with a disability, this statement is a critical take away point. A point that will certainly provide strength to bolster the self esteem of those living as “other”.

Read this book to surround your self with the infinite love between a mother and her daughter. Read this book to undo your stereotypes and perhaps be inspired to make a commitment to ending stigmatization of people living with “difference”
This is such a sweet tale of the love between a mother and her daughter. Alternating between Dena and Becky’s narrative, we are taken on the chronological journey of raising a child with a disability and personally growing up with it. Dena’s love for Becky shines through from her advocacy with doctors and schools, to allowing Becky the independence to move about the world in a way that is best for her. Becky’s frustration with the world around her reminds us to be mindful of our actions and inspires to make the world a better place. I appreciated their humor and insightful poetry throughout which added lightness to the story. An inspirational read for all parents so that we remember to listen to our children’s own solutions to their trials and tribulations of growing up.
Dena and Becky have been my friends for a number of years now, but I had never explored their history or given a great deal of thought to how it must have been for both of them to deal with Becky's disability.
I simply could not stop reading their story. Each of them writes candidly and clearly, but obviously without consultation or influence from the other. Their distinct personalities show themselves as the narrative develops and they each react to problems and situations. These are two very bright and capable women dealing with something that most of us know nothing about and will never have to deal with. And they do it with an amazing amount of humor and grace!
This is an important, touching and very human story. Read it!
Getting up close and personal is just the doorway to deeper insights about ourselves and our society. The simplicity of this book is awesome. Short chapters by a mother and her daughter living with cerebral palsey. They tell how it was and is to navigate through life at home, in school, in the dorms, with grandma, at the doctor's office and in the job market. Love and dedication mark the entire journey. And the inexcusable callousness and cruelty of the "regular world" towards the disabled jumps out of these pages leaving unforgettable burn marks on the psyches of readers who might never have to face such pains otherwise. A triumph of the spirit.
A fantastic read, thank you both for writing this.
This is one of the most honest books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. I would recommend this book for all parents and high school students.
