In October of 1934, a farm laborer named Claude Neal was lynched by a small group of men deep in the swamps of the Florida Panhandle. He was accused of murdering Lola Cannady, a 19 year old neighbor.

The Claude Neal lynching was the spark that ignited one of the most violent outbreaks in American history. In the first book-length study of the topic in more than 30 years, author and historian Dale Cox pushes back the mists of time to shed new light on the lynching and the related murders of Lola Cannady and Deputy Dave Ham. The result is a book that will forever change our understanding of what happened in Marianna and Jackson County, Florida, in the fall of 1934.

The Claude Neal Lynching The 1934 Murders of Lola Cannady Claude Neal eBook Dale Cox William Cox

Reading this book, one gets the feeling that justice does not prevail and only goes to show that no matter the crime, no matter the situation, people have their own conclusions and as shown in this book, take matters into their own hands.
It seems that almost 80 odd years later, history has repeated itself, not by lynching but by murders and rapes and mobs.
Unfortunately in 1934 Lola Cannady died a terrible death and because of that death, this led to riots, hatred and a frenzied mob who took the law into their own hands. And, even at this present day, people still talk about it.
It was a time long ago when race relations were at a stale mate, tensions were high and so hence the book shows the aftermath.
I recommend this book

sadly a very dark chapter of our history, just one of many stories
Good book
Good historical read.
This is a very interesting book about a series of events that were greatly misunderstood and incorrectly reported on. Mr. Cox sets the record straight on the events with this well-researched work.
I am 65 years old and have heard stories from my parents about this tragedy. However, they were sketchy at the best, so I was curious as to what really happened. What I got by reading the Dale Cox documentery was completely different story! This is a very fact laden story about a time in Jackson County, FL that exceeds your wildest dreams! I thought this was only one incidence, supported by the entire white community. While actually, it lead to a countywide war, and forced the governor to order martial law and to send in the military to squash it! This is great writing, with lots of history and suspense.
What can you say. It was an interesting historical book. Now a days you don't think about all the prejudice from the early years of the 20th century. But it was there. It had quite a bit of detail of what happened to each person involved in these crimes from the criminal to the law officers. A must read for people who love history and read true crime.
I found this book to be well-researched and easy to read. The author relays the facts without prejudice or hidden agenda. He describes both Lola Cannady and Claude Neal as murder victims and in no way does he try to justify the awful killing of Mr. Neal. The facts are laid out in chronological order, and readers can draw their own conclusion as to the guilt or innocence of Mr. Neal while being thoroughly revolted by the Lynch mob's brutal actions.
