M. R. James is best remembered for his ghost stories which are widely regarded as among the finest in English literature. One of James' most important achievements was to redefine the ghost story for the new century by dispensing with many of the formal gothic trappings of his predecessors, and replacing them with more realistic contemporary settings.

According to James, a story must "put the reader into the position of saying to himself 'If I'm not careful, something of this kind may happen to me!'"

This conveniently formatted Kindle edition collects all the stories from M.R. James' first three ghost anthologies: Ghost Stories of an Antiquary, More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary, and A Thin Ghost and Others. It is more attractively laid out and much easier to navigate than the free public-domain editions of the books, which are available from Amazon separately.

This collection has one curious defect, however. While reading through the table of contents, I was surprised to find one of James' most famous stories missing, "Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad." After performing a word search, I discovered that the story is indeed there, floating between "Count Magnus" and "The Treasure of Abbot Thomas," but for some reason was simply left out of the table of contents. This oversight is also present in the print edition.

So Nineteen Ghost Stories actually contains 20, with "Whistle" haunting the book about a quarter of the way through. Go to the search function, enter "whistle" and it will come to you, my lad.

This is a solid collection, but after reading these, I'm still not sure what all the fuss is about. I suppose I'm just not a huge M.R. James fan.
Easy to navigate, this collection is riveting. Sometime the ghosts are horrible, but sometimes they are creepy, just barely present. Yikes!

Despite a resurgence in interest in Edwardian horror writers and a substantial cult reputation, Montague Rhodes James yet remains somewhat outside the realm of popularity. A favorite of other writers, including Lovecraft, James's stories manage to combine a "comfortable" Edwardian (or earlier) period atmosphere with ingenious and sometimes quite disturbing horrors. A favorite story of mine in this collection is Count Magnus, but practically all the stories are gems of the genre. This collection makes a fine introduction to the works of a talented writer.
