A First Spanish Reader

A First Spanish Reader ERWIN w ROESSLER 9781545045060 Books

The repetition and context in thse short, simple readings make it easy to learn to read basic Spanish like nothing else I have seen. I have been learning phrases and sentences from the CDs of Learn Speanish in Your Car. But this reader gives me context and continuity for reading. I can guess much of the new material from context, plus they have a glossary. With this book, I will get the basics down.

The simple, step by step approach is better than most texts I've seen and motivates me to pull out my Kindle in odd moments and study for a few moments. Success builds enthusiasm. And at the price it's a bargain.

I also have "My Free and Open Kindle Formatted Spanish to English Dictionary" installed on my Kindle--highly recommended. Works in the background. Download at[...]. Remember that to use the "Change Primary Dictionary" command, you press Menu and select Settings. But you will look in vain for "Change Primary Dictionary." While you are in Settings you press the Menu key again, and a menu in a menu comes up with "Change Primary Dictionary."

I'm learning on my own so I am also using Vis-Ed vocabulary flash cards. (Rosetta Stone, by all accounts is a huge waste of money.) I have the Kindle version of Spanish at Your Fingertips for grammar. I'm going to join a free conversation group.

Cons: in this book navigation to a numbered location does not work, nor does navigation to specific chapters. I still give it 5 stars. Bookmarks do work. Of course text-to speech is worthless in Spanish on Kindle. Maybe in the next generation.

Apparently there are at least two versions of this, though I'm not sure of the difference (one other is free and doesn't say "interactive"). It's good for a beginning Spanish student to start to get a feel for sentence construction and learn new words, most of which can be figured out from context. If you can't figure them out, there's a good glossary in the back. Note that this is a reader, not a primer; it's not going to teach you the language - you'll need to know a very little bit to get started.

My only major complaint with this is the lack of useful bookmarks. Go To...Cover and Beginning take you to the blank page before the cover. Then you have to page in a few to get to the Table of Contents, which will get you to the different reading sections, questions, and the beginning of the glossary. But there are no links to the table of contents, the individual letters of the glossary, or the number list at the end, so I created my own. I don't know of any easy way to share them, so here's a list of locations that you can use to recreate my bookmarks via the Go To...Location feature 31, 127, 1394, 1702, 1730, 1941, 2003, 2280, 2292, 2439, 2606, 2677, 2724, 2805, 2889, 2913, 2965, 2973, 3112, 3159, 3215, 3442, 3465, 3581, 3735, 3843, 3856, 3949, 3964.
I had high school Spanish but never did anything with it. I recently set a goal to become fluent in Spanish. I purchased Rosetta Stone (which is great, by the way) and asked a friend who speaks Spanish to dig up some of her kids' old books for me. They were all way beyond what I'm capable of so I started looking for something else and found this reader. It is perfect for me. I am able to read the stories with some fluency so it isn't like I have to look up every other word, which makes it gratifying. I still need to look up several words in each story, but that just grows my vocabulary and since the words are used many times in the stories, they become committed to memory in an organic way.

Plus, it's free! A big "Thank You" to the author!
I am trying to learn Spanish [Latin American] because my wife is Mexican and have many friends from Latin America. This reader is set up nicely in that it has the English translation opposite the short stories, but the language is definitely European Spanish since many of the phrases I ask my wife and daughters [all college educated] about are one they understand but never use in Latin America.
Not perfect but for a free book, it deserved 5 stars. I started learning spanish on my own and slowed down back in october. I decided to start again this february. I really haven't learned verbs except for ser and estar and whatever basic ones you find in the first ten chapters of madrigal's magic key book.
That said, I'm multilingual and decided the best way to learn spanish should be the same way I approached the english language, french and others I speak.
This book works well in that it has basic words and it's easy to learn words in context. It starts with a story based in a school with some students being lazy and other's paying attention etc. You learn questions, feminine and masculine as you go along and it's so easy.
Also, each reading selection is short although it follows the first story while allowing the reader to work through one short section at a time. In each section, you learn different things such as knowing prepostions like behind, above, underneath etc, to learning colors, doors, windows, names of subjects, etc. It's perfect that way It's also subtle that after reading a short section, you can look back and realize, I learned prepostions describing places in this section. In that case, you're relaxed when reading and not looking for any patterns in the beginning.

What you may no like This is castillian spanish so you will see Vd. instead of Ud. Not a big deal for me. Just substitute Ud when you're reading out loud. Problem fixed.
Also, it doesn't have links to navigate to various chapters. For a free book, I really can't complain. If the font is small, you can try reading on kindle for pc or change it.

All in all, if you're new to learning the spanish language, I would wholeheartedly recommend this book.
